I don't think there will be any better soccer experience for this age group than the Baker blast. Over 140 teams took over the city of Bellingham with nothing but soccer on their minds. We saw some of the best players in the pacific northwest take to the fields from u12 up to u18 boys and girls and the pace was fast and furious. In past years, our teams have played in the lower 'copa' division but this year you competed in the top of the top...'Premier'!

We got a good look at a really great team from TSS in Vancouver on Friday night. Their passing was crisp and their movement on and off the ball was excellent! It seems that our first game after travel has always been our toughest performance as we seemed a little 'jet-lagged' from the trip.

However we gradually battled harder as the weekend went on and despite the 30 degree + heat dug our heels in and hit the ground running against Lake Stevens. After our pre-game 'speech' and trying to stay in the shade, our opening kick off was exactly what was discussed. Possession. 7 passes later and in the attacking zone we had our first corner kick! We had the other team in panic mode and they were trying to break up our plays by clearing the ball back to our back-line our out of bounds. We owned the first half and it was really great to see you play at that level! But wow, these kids really liked to 'take the body' as well as the fouls. Maybe all that contact helped you all get stuck in!

Inevitably, the old kick hard and run fast play got us and they opened the scoring. After we lost Courtenay to a nasty tackle, we called on Amanda and put her up front changing to a 3-4-3 formation to press. Jaymie, Taleaha and Dallas held tha back line and Marisa, Amanda and Bri were on the prowl! A few passes and Bri was sent through. She made a couple of nifty moves and was just about to send a cracker to the corner when, WHAM! Yup, a good old Lake Stevens tackle (in the box). Our trusty Jaymie stepped in and made no mistake...1-1 final.

I'm not going to mention names here because you all played very hard but Cassandra made some fantastic saves...all weekend!

That was a very good performance and an exciting game to watch! Thank you!

Our third game was a revenge-type situation;) Our girls wanted this rematch against the Zone 5 BCSG team. They had strenghtened their already strong roster with a couple of Metro players so we were in for a tough match. Once again, the 1st half was very even with the play. Both teams had some scoring opportunities but finally, late in the 1st they but one past our amazing Cassandra!

Thanks to Olivia for 'saving that other goal!;) And also to Jaymie for constantly 'sweeping' us out of trouble!

This was another hard fought battle where we had to 'let them know we were there' and we did just that. I think they planned on having an easy game but as I asked you all weekend to, "you left it all on the field!"

I was very impressed with your performance this weekend. You played some teams that were big, strong, fast, and skilled and you fit right in!

Someone mentioned something about goals and I think setting goals is very important. The one goal I had for all of you this past 3 months was to improve your game. This wasn't about winning or losing games or scoring goals and some have a tough time comprehending that. This was about improving your game. Period! I am very proud to have seen you through this 3 month period and can honestly say that you are all better players for it. The less wise can question success based on goals scored however, you that have been a part of this team have seen and experienced things that will truly add to your success as a soccer player.

I am really looking forward to seeing you all on the pitch this coming season and taking pride in the fact that you'll all be leaders on your teams with experience that few others will have.

You're a very special group of soccer players and I hope these past few months of experiences, memories and friendships will last a lifetime!

Get ready for a Blast!!!

Get ready to play your little hearts out and show some Island Pride as we get set to travel to Bellingham to play in the International Baker Blast representing Victorias U12 girls!

The trip starts for us on the 11AM ferry this Friday and our private coach will be waiting for us on the other side to bus us down in luxury to beautiful Bellingham. We were in tough all weekend long and throughout the weekend we gradually increased our level of play right up to the very end where we narrowly fell short to a very solid BC Games team from Vancouver (Zone 5). It'll be interesting to see how our (Zone 6) BCSG team fares against them as they sure had some 'weapons' (remember that shot Taleah;) Good luck to our local team in July!

It was great to see you all really start to gell as a team both on and off the field. We should all have some 'take-aways' from the weekend which might range from the following:

1. This can be a very physical game! Once we get stuck in and decide to 'own the ball' we can play at that level. We need to always play with confidence. If we're worried about the size of our opponants all the time we'll be thinking about that rather than using our skills. Remember to try to get your opponant thinking about you by defending tough and playing smart!

2. Rest and hydration are keys during long tournaments. By the end of the weekend we had some tired soldiers that when put in were raising their hands within minutes to come off again.

3. The better teams (as we've seen) are faster and more skilled than we're used to playing against. Skills will come as long as you're dedicated. Extra "backyard" sessions are great places to get extra touches on the ball. The highly dedicated kids increase their skills on their own desire to improve as well as weekly sessions with the team. They'll also get some running in on off days on their own to help with the fitness side. If you're finding yourself behind a step, maybe some interval training will help...If you'd like some guidance on 'extra's' please let me know...

4. Keep it simple. All the time we spend in practice working on passing and receiving need to be brought into the games. Playing a simple game, playing to feet and the way you face, receving in the direction you want to go, opening up to the play, sheilding the ball from the defender, moving off the ball, jockeying (not diving in). These are all skills that we work regularly. When we kept it simple, we were on fire and saw a lot of success. When we started to panic, we lost our composure and just 'kicked it'. Now, those teams were very good at applying quick pressure so it was very difficult to find time and space but I thought you gradually improved once you got used to the pace of the game.

This is all part of developing as a player. You're getting used to playing at a faster pace. I watched a couple of you play an extra spring league game last week and you really played well. The difference is that the pace wasn't as fast as you're getting used to. There were some nice little give and go's and ball movement. I suspect that when you all come back to play on your respective club teams during the season, you'll be used to playing at a higher level and you'll notice that our gold level is not as fast as what we're playing right now in competition and it just might seem easier...

We've got another hame game, a couple weeks of skills training and then we're off to the Baker Blast to cap off a great 3 months of soccer! Keep up the good work, get healthy again, and we'll see you back on the pitch!

(some of) Our Capitals
(some of) our fans!
Cheering on 'the boys' (nice win over the whitecaps 97's!!!)

Get better Syd! In speaking with the Whitecaps coach I was told to be ready for some very challenging games this weekend. He will be coming down to watch our team play this weekend as well so lets make sure we give him a reason to 'watch'!

We're on the 8am ferry so please be at the walk-on terminal by 7:15am (7:30 at the latest). Please make sure you're wearing your training jacket and pants and remember that you are representing Lower Island Soccer...(we all know what that means;) Our first game is at 11:30 so our private bus will be chauffering us straight to the field. We're there until 3pm so after we finish cheering on our u12 boys team we'll head back to our hotel and get ready as we have dinner reservations later on.

We have an evening session planned where we'll be doing a video analysis of our Whitecaps game last Saturday. There's lots of interesting play to review so it should be fun and informative. You guys look great on the big screen!!!

We'll have 2 games each day so we'll be busy. Please make sure we're all hydrated (starting today) and early to bed this evening as we'll need full 'horse power' for the weekend!

Another great experience for our Capitals so let's have fun and kick some...(you know what!)

WOW!!!!

What a day, what an experience for our Capitals on Saturday as we played host to the Vancouver Whitecaps prospects teams at Layritz. It was great to see the standard you need to play at in order to potentially play at a provincial level. I would suspect that what we played against in the u12 game will make up the majority of the upcoming provincial team so be very proud of your efforts!

And what a great opportunity to get a chance to playalongside them as we mixed the teams up after the first half. After a quick team name change, the "redcaps" quickly took to the field fully motivated to win the 1/2 game friendly. It seems the incentive was that the winners had the 'others' serve dinner! So they took the field and it was really great to see our Capitals jump right in and play a hard fought battle alongside some very big, very skilled, very fast, WHicaps girls. In the end the 'redcaps' were victorious in a 2-0 win...And Cassy with a shut-out!!!

I hope you all had a great day and took something away from the experience!

Let's train hard this week in preparation of our club challenge series in Vancouver next weekend at the Whitecaps training facility at SFU! and rest assured, we'll not be playing the whitecaps girls, although I'm sure we'll find some great competition!

Avoid sweets prior to the game!

These tips are from the BC Soccer website. Please have a read and try to make sure you're well hydrated at least a day before game day (if not al the time;)

1) A well-balanced daily diet is the key to maintaining the energy for intense training. This means 2/3 carbohydrates (starch, milk, fresh fruits and vegetables), 1/3 protein (meat, fish and poultry) and a minimal amount of added fat. Supplements, for the most part, have not been proven to work and are often expensive, unnecessary, and in some cases potentially dangerous.

2) A pre-game meal is not meant to supply the energy for a game – the energy will not reach the muscles in time. However, a high carbohydrate meal is easy and quick to digest and should be consumed 3 –4 hours before game time.

3) A small snack can be eaten 1 –2 hours prior to game time but avoid sweets – they will not give you instant energy.

4) Hydration is one of the most important components of an athletes’ preparation, and often one of the most neglected. It is crucial in regulating body temperature and avoiding early fatigue. Drink plenty of water before and during a game. Keep a water bottle by the goal posts – this may even encourage those forwards to get back and defend! Replace 1 litre of water for every kg of weight loss after a game (i.e. fluid loss from sweat).Your play on the field is driven by the amount and quality of the fuel in your tank. To ensure optimum performance follow the above guidelines and keep the fried schnitzel to a minimum.

***updates and stuff**

There has been a change in dates for the Whitecaps Club Challenge series hosted at the Whitecaps Training centre at SFU in Vancouver. We'll now be heading over on the 7th and 8th for an overnighter to play the top club select teams from the Vancouver region. We're guaranteed 4 games (2 Saturday and 2 Sunday). The level of play will be higher than what we're used to seeing over here so we'll have to step it up;) Remember, you're the best of this age group for LISA u12 girls...let's show it.

Whitecaps games on the 31st at Layritz turf. We play the u11 group on full field at noon. Do not take this team lightly. They are very skilled and will not be smaller due to age. Over 1000 kids try out for this squad and these 14 are hand chosen...
We also play the u12 Whitecaps team later on at 4:30 at Layritz. We'll be up against size and skill so I'll be looking for us to play with confidence in our abilities and really step it up. This team is the highest standard you'll see in the province at this age so if you want to see what it might take to play on a provincial team, pay close attention. You'll see a very "focused" team that comes to play soccer so when you think I'm being hard on you at training sessions this is the level we're working towards.

Spring League team...I have to say I've been very impressed with the level you elevate your game to when playing the u12 boys. You've been getting in tough and playing a fantastic possession game. All of the small sided stuff we do is really paying off for you as your composure and quick release is looking great! You should have gained plenty of confidence from the last game particularly with how physical it was and you guys dug right in and battled hard. 2 rockets from Ash and 1 from Bri were good to see. When you get in those 'top of the 18' positions with the ball we can't be afraid to have a go on net! We just have to remember that someone has got to follow the shot in on the keeper...still waiting for the diving header;)

***Prize*** 1st one to show me 30 juggles. The only rule is that you must use each foot 10 times...thigh juggling is too easy!:) show me some skill to earn the prize! So on off days you may want to grab a ball and use your backyard or head to a field and work on your touch...

Over all focus...when we take the field whether it be for practice or games, warm up or other wise, you are high performance athletes training to compete at an elite level of soccer! You've come along way since we started...you should know the expectations by now as I believe I've been very clear on more than one occasion. Some have figured it out while others need to increase their focus on the game. This is what you've been selected for. We need your commitment to the team and our overall development.

Have a great weekend...We'll see some tonight at Hampton, and all of you on Monday!

Saturdays Game, May 10th!

Let's come out to play on Saturday!

Game time is 3-4:30PM at Layritz Turf Field (be there no later than 2:30!)

We're, again, playing a full field game so make sure you drink lots of fluids on Friday/Saturday morning, get some sleep and try not do do anything too aerobic in the few hours leading up to game time so we can play hard for 60+ minutes and show some lower island pride!

Let's go CAPITALS!!!

More "umph" needed...

It was a great day for a game up in Nanaimo. Our Capitals all showed up nice and early, we had a nice little pre-game chat and a warm up and we actually started with a strong passing game right away. It looked like we were really clicking out on the field until the first goal that came really against the flow of the play.

We had a few of our Capitals that stayed strong throughout the first 20 minutes (Taleah, Syd, Jaymie, Dallas, Bri). I think we all realized that at this high level it can get very physical on the pitch and we have to be prepared for it. Get stuck in and stay stuck in!

We have to give credit where it's due and Nanaimo came to play. They were skilled and well coached and didn't back down from nothin'! Their 2 speedy strikers caused problems for our back line on many great through balls.

Although there wasn't alot of "finish" on our part, we maintained a healthy portion of the possession throughout the game with the bulk being in the first 20 and the last 10 minutes (where Maddy found her 5th gear;). We still have to remember above all that we need to defend our goal first, then work on the attack. We had lapses in our box where we got caught watching the very skilled forwards work through to goal...remember to get a foot in and tackle hard, move the ball out to the wings and then sort out the attack.

I was quite impressed for the most part with the passing through the mid field and I can see you're thought process is changing in how you're playing out and using the wings more, switching the play and sending through balls for strikers to run on to so let's keep that going, correct a couple defensive tasks and we'll be in good shape. Our Capitals have some great skills but we also need to match it with a strong desire, passion, and intensity on the field! Let's dig deep this weekend and put a couple in the back of the net!

We'll be missing one of our star defenders for a short while as Dallas suffered an ankle sprain near the end of the game. Although she'll fully recover she'll need to rest it for a few weeks. Let's all wish Dallas a speedy recovery. The weather was great, the facility was great, the competition was great and your passing was great!

From the opening kick off I could see a marked improvement since our first game against JDF's island champion u13's. On several occasions there was 5+ passes put together working the ball up the field which was pretty to watch. There was some excellent composure on the ball but we still managed to lose it in the attacking 1/3 where we're trying to drive to the net from sharp angles rather than playing the ball to the top of the 6 to give a better chance to your teammates. We'll need to work on decision making on the attack.

The goals that were scored (other than the nice header) could've been prevented had we not got caught watching. When we lost possession we failed to initiate our 1st defender to delay the attack while our man-marking was lacking. This gave their attacking forwards plenty of time to slot the ball through on net. We'll need to be tighter on our checks and quicker to pressure the player with the ball as we move forward to some even tougher matches this season.

Some of you were tested in different positions to see who you match up well with and where you play best. I appreciate the fact that you played hard no matter where you were positioned. These friendly's are a great opportunity to play in different spots so we can all learn to respect the roles of each other on the field. Next weeks game against the Nanaimo DDC team there will be a little less 'testing' of positions;)

A huge thanks to Gerry Rand from Gorge (the evil empire) for fielding his u12 boys (+ the dynamo '98!). And also thanks to Craig T. from the u16 boys metro team for officiating the game...Great job!

Oh...it was good to have Monty back out there after resting her achilles and we missed you out there J!

Game date change

Please note, due to the Salt Spring Island tournament the weekend of April 27th, our match against the Nanaimo DDC team will be pushed back to the following weekend. Thanks very much to our new assistant coach in Shane Paul. Shane has played the game at very high levels and brings plenty of experience to the field.

Tonight we had a chance to work on passing and support (possession). We learned that we need to play the ball early and immediately move to support. Triangles are good but even they need to move and unless you're told to "turn" or your have "time" that you should play the way you face. Even when in the attacking 1/3 we still need to maintain possession so unless you've got a shot on net you should be looking to find support rather than trying to dribble through the wall of defenders.

By the end of the night we saw some fantastic ball movement. There's plenty of talent on this squad, we now need to work as a team and play smart.

See you Wednesday at Colquitz.

Spring league info

For those playing spring league at Gorge FC with us we are playing in the Int. Despite the size difference, you all fought hard. You got stuck in on most occasions and won many battles for the ball!
2. I could see you looking for the right places to play the ball. The JDF squad didn't give you the time you're used to having to play it...
3. Your passing and receiving was very good. I saw a lot of very nice 1st touches on the ball!

A couple things we'll need to work on:

1. Quicker release of the ball. Keep your composure but we'll have to learn to get the ball under control and play it earlier.
2. Defensive marking. When we lost possession in our 1/3 we started to chase the ball a bit. When we have 3 of us chasing the ball we leave attackers wide open.
3. Midfielders have a lot of ground to cover...more than you're used to. It's great to get up in the attack but we need to recover quicker and make sure the opposing attackers aren't free.

All in all I was pleased with the performance and this gives us a very good "benchmark" to measure our improvements against.

Remember, this was our first game together and you're all getting used to each other. You played a game against the now, Island champions in the u13 gold division who have played together all year! This will be a very exciting brand of soccer to watch. They are building a new stadium in the heart of Langford complete with restaurants, retail and, yes, a brand new, state-of-the-art turf field!

They will be ready for play for at the opening of the 2009 season starting in April/May of 2009!

They have done well with an incredible coaching staff lead by Colin Miller.
